Historic Grimes County Seat

Houses in Anderson, TX

Welcome to Anderson, the historic county seat of Grimes County, Texas, a small courthouse town set ten miles northeast of Navasota in the rolling Post Oak country of Central Texas.

Anderson is a small city and the county seat of Grimes County, Texas, in the rolling Post Oak country of Central Texas, about ten miles northeast of Navasota. The 2020 census counted just 193 residents, making it one of the smaller county seats in the state; Grimes County as a whole has about 29,000 people, and Navasota is its largest town. Anderson's importance comes from its role as the seat of county government rather than from its size. The town centers on the historic Grimes County Courthouse, an imposing civic landmark that has been restored through the Texas Historic Courthouse Preservation Program. Around the courthouse square cluster the county's government offices, a post office, churches, and a handful of homes, giving Anderson the feel of a living museum of the nineteenth-century Texas courthouse town. The county was formed from Montgomery County in 1846, and Anderson has served as its seat since the county's early years. Local history carries colorful episodes. A Grimes County grand jury meeting in Anderson indicted the outlaw Clyde Barrow in 1933 for robbing a business in Navasota — a footnote that ties the quiet county seat to one of the most famous names in Depression-era Texas crime. Public education is provided by Anderson-Shiro Consolidated Independent School District, which serves roughly 980 students across the surrounding area through elementary, junior high, and high school campuses. For residents, Anderson is a quiet, history-rich village whose daily services, shopping, and employment are found in nearby Navasota, College Station, and Bryan. Its position at the junction of State Highway 90 and Farm Roads 149 and 1774 places it within easy reach of Texas A&M University, the Sam Houston National Forest, and the broader Houston-Brazos Valley region. Those who live in Anderson value its unhurried pace, its historic architecture, and its close ties to the surrounding Grimes County countryside.
