Crockett is a city and the county seat of Houston County, Texas, set in the rolling Piney Woods of East Texas between Lufkin and Palestine. The city had a population of about 6,300 at the 2020 census and serves as the commercial and civic center of a largely rural, forested county. Its name honors frontiersman and Alamo defender Davy Crockett, a connection reinforced by the sprawling national forest that bears the same name just outside town.
Crockett sits at a genuine crossroads. U.S. Highway 287 and State Highways 7, 19, and 21 converge on the city, which is encircled by Loop 304 — one of the first loop roads built in the nation. The Ratcliff Lake Recreation Area, within the forest, offers lake access and campgrounds a short drive from town.
Schools are provided by Crockett Independent School District, with Crockett High School serving the city's older students. A local medical center anchors healthcare in the area, and the city's economy draws on timber, agriculture, and regional services.
