Coupland is a small unincorporated community in southeastern Williamson County, Texas, set within the rolling Blackland Prairie about thirty miles northeast of downtown Austin. The town was founded in 1887 by Theodore Van Buren Coupland, a Civil War major and former Travis County sheriff, who established the settlement on land he had inherited, and it developed as a stop along the railroad through the cotton-farming country of eastern Williamson County. Coupland's population has long been small—roughly 135 residents as of the late 1990s and only a few hundred today—and the community has retained the feel of a turn-of-the-century agricultural village. Its compact historic core holds a cluster of older commercial and civic buildings, and the surrounding countryside remains a landscape of farms, ranches, and open prairie. Coupland is best known for the Coupland Dance Hall and the Coupland Inn, which draw visitors from across Central Texas for honky-tonk dancing, live music, and a genuine slice of Texas small-town culture. The community is served by the Coupland Independent School District, which operates Coupland Elementary for grades K-8, with high school students attending Taylor High School nearby. The town's location at the eastern edge of the Austin region places it within reach of both the city and the barbecue and small-town traditions of Elgin and Taylor. Despite its small size, Coupland maintains a distinct civic identity through its school, dance hall, and community gatherings. Its position between Elgin and Taylor, and within a short drive of the Austin metropolitan area, gives residents a quiet rural setting with convenient access to regional employment and amenities.
