Northeast Texas Rural Community

Apartments in Telephone, TX

Welcome to Telephone, a small Fannin County community northeast of Bonham that carries one of Texas's most memorable small-town names.

Telephone is an unincorporated community in northeastern Fannin County, Texas, at the junction of Farm roads 273 and 2029, about twelve miles northeast of the county seat of Bonham and a short distance from the Oklahoma line. It occupies the rolling prairie of the Red River border region, a landscape of pastures, creek bottoms, and scattered farmsteads that has defined northeast Texas for generations. The community began in 1886, when an early merchant named Poke Hindman opened a general store at the crossroads. According to the Fannin County Historical Commission, the settlement had no name at first; when residents gathered to choose one, they reportedly considered both "Telegraph" and "Telephone," ultimately honoring the new invention that had reached the area. The name has made Telephone something of a Texas curiosity ever since, and it is often listed among the state's most distinctive place names. Settlement in the vicinity actually predates the town, with families moving into the area as early as the 1870s. Once Hindman's store anchored the crossroads, the community grew steadily, and Telephone developed the churches, school, and small commercial row typical of a Fannin County farming center. By the mid-1940s it supported roughly ten businesses and about 280 residents, a population that was reported through the 1960s. Like many rural crossroads across northeast Texas, Telephone has since settled into a quieter existence, with its commercial role largely absorbed by Bonham and the larger towns of the county. Public school students attend Bonham ISD, and the community remains tied to that city for services and commerce. Surrounding agriculture, along with the nearby attractions of Bonham State Park and the Caddo National Grassland, shapes both daily life and the local economy. Telephone endures as a small, tight-knit place with an outsized name in Texas geography.
