Montague County Rural Community

Apartments in Sunset, TX

Welcome to Sunset, a small unincorporated community in Montague County, on the Fort Worth and Denver Railway in North Texas.

Sunset is a small unincorporated community in Montague County, Texas, in the rural north-central part of the state, near the Red River country that borders Oklahoma. It sits amid the farming and ranching landscape that defines much of Montague County, with the nearest incorporated town, Bowie, a short drive away. The community was founded in the 1870s, during the era when railroads were opening the North Texas frontier to settlement. The Fort Worth and Denver Railway was built through the area and still runs through Sunset today, serving as a lasting reminder of the town's origins as a railroad-era settlement. For much of its history, Sunset functioned as a small incorporated town with a handful of businesses serving the surrounding agricultural community. One curious detail of local history is that a surveying error placed Sunset in neighboring Wise County until 1900, when the boundary was corrected and the community was properly located within Montague County. The community remained incorporated through much of the 20th century, with its population and business count fluctuating with the fortunes of rural Texas, but in 2007 it disincorporated and returned to unincorporated status, which it retains today. The population is small — a few hundred residents — spread across the surrounding countryside. Sunset is served by the Bowie Independent School District, based in the nearby city of Bowie, which provides elementary, middle, and high school education for the area. That connection to Bowie is central to daily life: Bowie supplies shopping, healthcare, and services, while the larger Dallas–Fort Worth metroplex lies within driving distance to the southeast for employment and urban amenities. For residents, Sunset offers a quiet, country lifestyle in the open ranch country of North Texas. It is a place defined less by municipal services and more by land, agriculture, and community — a small, unincorporated remnant of the region's railroad and settlement history where the pace of life remains slow and the landscape dominates.
