Fannin County Rail Town
Apartments in Savoy, TX
Welcome to Savoy, a Fannin County city in Northeast Texas, established in 1872 along the Texas and Pacific Railway west of Bonham.
Savoy is a city in Fannin County, Texas, located about ten miles west of Bonham, the county seat, in the northeastern part of the state. Its 2020 population was 712. The town's history is closely tied to the railroad and to the agricultural economy of the Blackland Prairie. Savoy was established in 1872 on land sold to the Texas and Pacific Railway Company by Col. William Savoy, for whom the town is named. The railroad extended its tracks through the community in the 1870s, and with the trade opportunities the line provided, Savoy became a shipping center for area farmers producing cotton, corn, grain, and other crops. A post office opened in 1873, and during the same decade the Savoy Male and Female College began operations, reflecting the town's early ambitions. The rail era made Savoy a small but active commercial point on the line between the larger towns of the region. Over time, as agriculture mechanized and the railroads consolidated, the town settled into the quieter pattern of a rural service center, a role it continues to play today. Modern Savoy is a compact community with homes, churches, and a few local businesses clustered near its historic core, surrounded by the open farmland of Fannin County. Public education is provided through the local schools serving the area, and the town's small scale keeps its civic life intimate and community-centered. Bonham, a short drive to the east, provides retail, medical, and government services, while the Dallas–Fort Worth metroplex lies farther to the west. Savoy's identity remains that of a railroad-born farming town, rooted in the prairie landscape and the rhythms of rural Northeast Texas, where residents value the quiet, the space, and the sense of continuity that come with a long-settled small town.
