Rosebud is a small city in Falls County, Texas, on the fertile Blackland Prairie of central Texas, along U.S. Highway 77 roughly midway between Waco and Bryan-College Station. The 2020 census counted 1,296 residents. Its location places it within easy reach of the county seat of Marlin and the larger employment and shopping centers of Waco and College Station. The community developed as an agricultural trading center, serving the cotton, grain, and livestock economy of the surrounding prairie. Like many Central Texas towns, its population has risen and fallen with the fortunes of farming, and it reached several thousand residents in the mid-twentieth century before settling into its present smaller scale. A distinctive piece of local identity is the tradition of keeping a rosebush in every yard, said to have been started by an editor of the town newspaper; the name and the custom have been linked in local memory ever since. Rosebud has long punched above its size in community infrastructure, supporting a hospital and a nursing home that serve the wider Falls County countryside, along with a consolidated school district and a collection of churches. Those institutions anchor the town's role as a rural service point for the farms and small communities around it. Public education is provided by the Rosebud-Lott Independent School District. Residents commute to Marlin, Waco, Temple, or the Bryan-College Station area for many jobs, while the town itself retains a quiet, neighborly atmosphere amid the open prairie.
