North Texas Farming Community

Apartments in Ravenna, TX

Welcome to Ravenna, a small farming community in northwestern Fannin County, just south of the Red River and a short drive from Bonham.

Ravenna is a small incorporated city in the northwestern corner of Fannin County, Texas, about nine miles northwest of Bonham, the county seat, and roughly five miles southeast of the Red River, which forms the Texas-Oklahoma border. It sits on Farm Roads 274 and 1753 in the gently rolling farmland of North Texas, within easy reach of Bonham and the Sherman-Denison area to the west. The community was settled as an agricultural town, with early residents including John Hilyard Tackitt, Alonzo Larkin, J. T. Crawford, and T. A. Patillo. Farming—and for many years cotton—anchored the local economy, and cotton gins once operated in town. Ravenna's population has remained remarkably steady since the 1940s, a reflection of its stable, rural character rather than boom-and-bust growth. In 1949, the community's own school was annexed into the Bonham school system, and students have attended Bonham ISD schools ever since. Today Ravenna is home to about 175 people, making it one of the quieter corners of Fannin County. The town's modest footprint, surrounding farmland, and short distance to Bonham give it an appealing balance: the peace and acreage of rural living with a full-service county seat just up the road. Residents tend to be drawn by the open space, the lower cost of rural property, and a pace of life that has changed little over the decades. Ravenna is best understood as a farming community first and a town second. Its appeal is the land and the quiet of the Red River valley, and it fits people who want a rural homestead, a small-town setting, and easy access to the services and schools of Bonham without the density of larger North Texas cities.
