Cotton Country Town in Knox County
Apartments in Munday, TX
Welcome to Munday, a Knox County farming town at a crossroads of West Texas highways, known for its cotton, its produce and its proud small-school tradition.
Munday is a city in southeastern Knox County, Texas, on the level, cotton-growing plains of the Rolling Plains region between Abilene and Wichita Falls. The community dates from 1893, when a store was built at the site. Originally known as Maud, it was renamed for postmaster R. P. Munday when the first post office opened in 1894. The Wichita Valley Railroad arrived in 1906, and Munday incorporated the same year; with nearly a thousand residents by 1910, it was briefly the largest town in Knox County, and its population peaked around 2,270 in 1950 before settling into the smaller figure of roughly 1,250 seen today. Agriculture has always defined the place. Cotton was the early staple, processed through a gin built in 1900, and it remains a major crop. Irrigation later turned Munday into a center for vegetable production, with onions, potatoes, cucumbers, melons and other produce grown on surrounding farms and shipped to market. Texas A&M University opened a vegetable research center in Munday in 1971, underscoring the town's agricultural significance to the region. The economy still runs on farming, ginning, grain handling and the services that support them. Munday today is a small, quiet community whose grid of streets holds homes, churches, a nine-hole golf course, a city park and the county library, while farm roads stretch outward into cotton fields and rangeland. The town sits about 75 miles from both Abilene and Wichita Falls, giving it a self-contained rural character with regional cities within day-trip distance. Its schools, its sports tradition and the agricultural calendar form the backbone of community life, and the surrounding countryside reinforces the close-knit, working rhythm of a classic West Texas farm town.
