Montgomery is a small, historically significant city in Montgomery County, Texas, situated about 50 miles north of Houston between Conroe and the Sam Houston National Forest. Roughly 2,900 residents live within the city, which sits a short distance west of Interstate 45 and just north of Lake Conroe's upper shoreline. Despite its small size, Montgomery holds an outsized place in Texas history: the settlement dates to the Republic of Texas era in the 1830s and ranks among the oldest towns in the state. The city is best known as the birthplace of the Texas Lone Star Flag. Dr. Charles Bellinger Stewart, a Montgomery resident and early Texas statesman, sketched the proposed flag design in the late 1830s, and his drawing became the basis for the state flag adopted in 1839.
