Railroad Town in Falls County

Apartments in Lott, TX

A small Falls County city founded on the San Antonio and Aransas Pass Railway in 1890, set between Waco and Cameron on U.S. 77.

Lott is a small city in west central Falls County, Texas, situated along U.S. Route 77 about 26 miles south of Waco. It was founded in 1890, when the San Antonio and Aransas Pass Railway built its line through the area the year after the Texas Townsite Company purchased the land. The new town was named for Uriah Lott, the president of the railroad, and it quickly developed as a regional hub for cotton production and shipping, anchoring the surrounding agricultural economy. The city occupies high ground between two creeks — the north-flowing Little Deer Creek and the south-flowing Cottonwood Creek, both tributaries of the Brazos River — a setting that helped define its early role as a shipping point. Like many central Texas railroad towns, Lott grew with the cotton trade and later settled into a quieter rhythm as agriculture and transportation changed. Over the decades its population has fluctuated, and the town has remained small, with a 2020 census population of 642. Today Lott functions as a quiet, residential community within the larger network of Falls County towns. Its compact downtown still marks the old rail and highway crossing, and the city's homes and institutions are arranged around that historic core. Students attend the Rosebud-Lott Independent School District, which operates an elementary campus and a combined middle/high school in the area, and the schools serve as a focal point for Lott, Rosebud, and the surrounding countryside. U.S. Route 77 connects the city north to Waco and south to Cameron, while Texas Highway 320 links it northeast to Marlin, the county seat. This positioning gives residents a genuinely small-town, agricultural setting with Waco's employment, retail, medical, and educational amenities within about half an hour. The result is a modest, unhurried central Texas town whose railroad and cotton heritage remains visible in its layout and identity.
