Coyote Flats is a small incorporated city in Johnson County, Texas, in the open countryside south of the Dallas–Fort Worth metroplex. It lies about six miles south of Keene and seven miles southwest of Alvarado, with downtown Fort Worth roughly 30 miles to the north and Dallas about 40 miles to the northeast. The city covers roughly 3.3 square miles. Coyote Flats took shape relatively recently as a municipality. The area first appeared in the census as a census-designated place in 2010, and residents later moved to incorporate the city after opposing an annexation attempt by neighboring Keene. Incorporation preserved the community's rural, low-density character and its local control over land use. The area's name evokes the open, flat terrain that characterizes this part of Johnson County. The 2020 census counted 345 residents. The city has no school campuses within its limits, so students attend nearby Johnson County school districts — primarily Cleburne Independent School District and Grandview Independent School District — based on residential zoning. Coyote Flats remains a quiet, rural community of homes and acreage set among the county's gently rolling landscape. Agricultural and grazing land still surrounds many of the homes, reinforcing the community's country character. Its location keeps it within commuting distance of Fort Worth and the broader Metroplex, while its small scale and open spaces preserve a distinctly country lifestyle. The city's small government focuses on the basics, and the landscape remains much as it was before incorporation. Nearby Cleburne, the county seat, provides shopping, services, and recreation, including Cleburne State Park and Lake Pat Cleburne.
