Bagwell is an unincorporated community in eastern Red River County, Texas, in the northeastern corner of the state near the Red River. The settlement developed around 1876 as a stop on the Texas and Pacific Railway, serving as a shipping point for cotton and lumber drawn from the surrounding farms and pine forests. Its first post office was moved from Robbinsville, a small community a short distance to the south, and the new town took the name of early resident Milas Bagwell. By 1884 the community had cotton gins, a sawmill, a gristmill, a church, and a district school, with a population of about 200. The community sits at the junction of Farm-to-Market Roads 2120 and 2573, in the gently rolling countryside of East Texas.
